چکیده

Introduction: Two-dimensional (2D)-phased vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays offer unique advantages for scaling up single-mode power for high-brightness applications such as fibre laser pumps. They tend, however, to operate in the undesirable out-of-phase mode, which has an on-axis null in the far field [1]. In-phase VCSEL arrays with an on-axis maximum in the far field have been obtained primarily with antiguided, top-emitting designs [2–5]. These structures, however, face difficult challenges in thermal management and current injection uniformity, especially for larger arrays. These difficulties can be substantially mitigated with a bottom-emitting design, as commonly used for high-power incoherent 2D VCSEL arrays. The key design advantages include significantly reducing thermal resistance from the active region to the heatsink and direct current injection into the array elements. Previous bottom-emitting coherent arrays have employed reflectivity modulation and/or mesa etching, which led to an out-of-phase operation [1, 6, 7]. We report a bottom-emitting VCSEL array with an antiguided index profile created by a simple, self-aligned process to demonstrate in-phase, continuous-wave (CW) emission, which represents a critical step towards coherent, high-brightness arrays.

Modal Properties of Two-Dimensional Antiguided Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser Arrays

We present a detailed analysis on 2-D (4 4 square-lattice) antiguided vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays based on the effective-index model. The calculation shows that the array can operate under 2-D resonant coupling, provided that the resonance condition in both the horizontal and vertical directions is satisfied. Consequently, the resonant-mode edge radiation loss is inver...

Beam steering via resonance detuning in coherently coupled vertical cavity laser arrays

Coherently coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser arrays offer unique advantages for nonmechanical beam steering applications. We have applied dynamic coupled mode theory to show that the observed temporal phase shift between vertical-cavity surface-emitting array elements is caused by the detuning of their resonant wavelengths. Hence, a complete theoretical connection between the diffe...

Coherent coupling of two-dimensional arrays of defect cavities in photonic crystal vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers

An approach for creating two-dimensional arrays of coherently coupled vertically emitting laser cavities is demonstrated. This is achieved by creating a 232 array of defect cavities within the top distributed Bragg reflector of a photonic crystal vertical cavity surface-emitting laser. The optical coupling occurs laterally through coupling regions defined between the defect cavities. Modifying ...

Bottom-Emitting VCSEL Arrays for Integrated Optical Particle Manipulation

The purely optical manipulation of particles has gained increasing interest in recent years. Especially the combination of optical manipulation with microfluidics offers new possibilities, such as the contamination-free handling of micrometer-sized particles in biology and medicine without any mechanical contact. VCSELs (vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers) are an excellent choice for optic...
